DC Distribution Systems for Integration of Renewable Energy Resources into Distribution Networks

 ICREGA’16 aims at gathering scientists and engineers from academia and industry to discuss the generation and applications in the broad field of renewable energy applications.

More than 100 years after the war of the currents between Edison and Westinghouse, DC distribution of electrical power has again come to the forefront as a possible means to handle the challenges facing the power system in the smart grid era. This expectancy is based on the fact that many of the smart grid technologies are inherently DC in nature: the majority of distributed energy resources (i.e., PV arrays, fuel cells) produce DC power; local storage options are DC in nature. By providing a DC interface to these technologies, their efficiency and stability can be significantly improved.

Despite these advantages, a little experience is currently available regarding DC distribution systems, as almost nobody has worked with DC electricity in over 100 years. The goal of this session is to provide an overview of recent achievements and trends on DC distribution systems, involving theoretical and experimental advances from device level to the system application level. We seek innovative papers reporting substantial, original and completed work, that address themes related to DC distribution systems, and how they can facilitate the integration of renewable energy resources into existing networks.

This special session is dedicated to study the impacts of DC Distribution Systems on the widespread Renewable Energy Resources. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

► Protection of DC distribution systems .

► Power quality issues in DC distribution systems.

► Control of power electronics-intensive DC microgrids.

► Stability of DC microgrids.

► Current advances in AC/DC power electronic conversion .
